Channel Bass by Winslow Homer (1904) reflects the artist’s time in Homosassa, Florida, a small fishing village on the Gulf Coast. Homer, known for his love of the outdoors, traveled there in winter to fish and paint. He called the fishing “the best in America” and used the experience to create vivid, lifelike watercolors.

In this work, he depicts a channel bass suspended in the clear, shallow waters of the Homosassa River. The fish’s bright, golden scales catch the light, while the surrounding blue tones suggest the river’s clarity. But all is not calm—the fish appears to be foul-hooked, a detail that hints at struggle.

Lovingly restored and enhanced for modern canvas, this 19th century classic brings frontier heritage to your cabin or office walls.
